Defense Department Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Put Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation determined that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the document acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released later this week.
