A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
